Full Description
Archaeological work in 1999 and 2000 recorded evidence of salt-making. A large quantity of briquetage included hand-bricks, pedestals and trays, the amount of pedestals and hand-bricks indicating brine evaporation was taking place. A possible hearth was also recorded. Pottery recovered from a dry creek (briquetage came from the same context) was dated to the late Iron Age, comparing with the Dragonby and Old Sleaford assemblages, and demonstrated a fusion of La Tene II and III styles. Radiocarbon dating on a piece of roundwood found in the same deposit as briquetage and pottery, however, gave a conflicting, early- to mid-Iron Age date. This conflict is thought to result from the removal of deposits by tidal scouring, causing the juxtaposition of different deposits. The restricted area of the site (circa 900m squared) is unusual, the recorded deposits most likely being on the periphery of the salt-making area. Present evidence suggests that the site was a brine evaporation site with low occupation activity. The undecorated pottery indicates a low-status community. {1}{2}
