Full Description

PRN 70232 During a watching brief, features relating to a structure or structures of unknown function were recorded. An east/west aligned wall foundation of unbonded irregular limestone fragments was recorded. This was abutted by a floor of unbonded limestone extending southwards; more dispersed fragments of limestone found to the east may be a continuation of the floor. A hearth constructed of 13th century north/south aligned ceramic tiles set on edge was recorded to the west of the floor. A fragment of masonry differing in build from the wall (irregular limestone with a mortar bond) is thought to represent the continuation of the east/west building line. The building is thought to have been demolished in the early post-medieval period.{1}{2} A square timber post, measuring 40mm by 40mm, was also recorded in situ (at circa SK97729 71149) in the base of the trench. Organic deposits across the bottom of the trench were dated to the late 12th/early 13th century from pottery finds. Potential for preservation of organic remains was thought to be good.{1}{2}
