Full Description

Large quantities of Romano-British artefacts have been found in this location, suggesting a probable Roman settlement site was in this vicinity. The finds have included: A denarius of Caracella, which is now in the City and County Museum, was found in April 1953 at SK 9791 6029. {1} In 1954, workmen at the quarry to the south of Coleby found pits containing ash and pottery which were destroyed while extracting rock. The pottery dated from the 2nd to the 4th century. Many Romano-British sherds were found on spoil heaps in the quarry bottom. Two pits were seen in section in the south-western corner, one producing mid to late Roman pottery. A sherd of Samian F37 with a panel of human figures was found 1ft below the surface in the edge of the quarry. It was presented to the City and County Museum by the finder. The lower stone of a rotary quern was also recovered. There is a possible building in the field to the west which, together with the quantity of finds recovered in this area, would suggest the presence of Roman settlement nearby. {2}{3}{4} A lead spindle whorl or loom weight was also found in 1958 at SK 981 599, and presented to City and County Museum, together with 2nd and 3rd century pottery. {5}{6}{7} A large hoard of Roman antoniniani was found at the rear of the quarry to the south of Coleby (SK 978 601) by a metal detectorist in February 1975. About 15 to 20 thousand coins were recovered, contained in a large East Midlands type pot. The hoard contained coins ranging from c.260 to 282 AD, and included coins of about 10 different Emperors, mostly of the Gallic Empire. The hoard was mostly dispersed after discovery. A pottery scatter over the field indicates settlement of the 1st to the 4th century, and included an unusual sherd forming the lid or shallow dish made from the base of a grey jar, found soon after the discovery of the hoard, in the summer of 1975. {8}{9}{10}{11}{12}
