Full Description
44046
The settlement of Helsey is first documented in the thirteenth century. The second element of the name derives from the Old English meaning 'an island, raised land in the marsh' and the first element would appear to be Old Norse 'hjallr', 'a shed for drying fish' and also 'a ledge'. The exact meaning of the name must remain obscure. {1}
Medieval ridge and furrow field system has been noted on aerial photographs. {2}
