Summary

Former Wesleyan Chapel, Middle Street, now a house named Chapel Lodge

Type and Period (2)

Protected Status/Designation

Full Description

61849 A chapel is indicated on the 1905 OS County Series, and 1956 1:10560. A building is still on the site, which appears to be the same building. {1}{2} The site was visited in 2009. Documentary sources suggests that the extant chapel, which is now a house, was built in 1884 to replace an earlier chapel of 1832. It is unclear if this was on the same site. The present building is a low gabled structure with a slate roof. The broad street front has two round-arched windows with a small circular window between. The eaves cornice and gable verges have dentil brick decoration. The gabled porch on the west gable has a blocked flat-headed doorway and a narrow round-arched window. The lower brick courses on the street front are rendered. The gabled annexe behind appears to be a later addition and does not appear on the 1905 OS Map.{3}{4}{5}{6}
