Full Description
61831
Dunston Pillar was built in 1751 by Sir Francis Dashwood. It was a land lighthouse, comprising a 92 foot square tapering pillar with a large glass lantern which was lit every night to guide travellers across the heath. There is a spiral staircase inside the pillar leading to the top with a ballustraded gallery. Around the base dashwood provided refreshment rooms and pleasure grounds, and it became a fashionable meeting place. Once the heath was enclosed and good roads were built there was no longer a need for the lantern, so in 1810 the Earl of Buckingham substituted the lantern with a statue of George III. During the second world war the RAF removed the statue, which is now in Lincoln Castle, and the pillar was shortened. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
