Full Description

PRN 70227 During a watching brief, the remains of a 13th century brick-built pottery kiln were recorded, thought to be the only brick-built kiln of this period. The kiln was circular/oval in shape, with evidence for flues on the west and possibly the east sides - the north and south sides were not excavated. Surviving remnants included the floor, the east wall (to eight courses), and the stoke pits or working areas. The base was constructed of fired clay bricks, but the bricks in the remaining wall were only vitrified on the inner faces. The lack of a clearly identifiable stoke pit may indicate that stoking took place directly on the ground surface outside the kiln, a feature associated with multi-flue kilns. The base was sealed by a deposit containing early to mid-13th century pot, suggesting that this was the last firing of the kiln. Archaeomagnetic dating of the kiln, however, gave a negative result, so this cannot be confirmed.{3} The kiln appears to have been in use during the transitional period between two pottery types in Lincoln, 12th century Lincoln Glazed ware (LSW1) and 13th-14th century Lincoln Glazed ware (LSW2).{1}{2}
