Full Description
The Baumber brick and tile works is located off the A158, to the north-west of Baumber village. In 1871, the brickmaker employed seven men and a boy when the production was as its peak. There was a complex of buildings marked on the 1888 OS map, which are believed to include drying sheds, store sheds and a kiln. {1}{2}
By 1906 most of the buildings on the site had been demolished, apart from what is thought to be the kiln and a possible store shed. The remains of the brick pits survive as earthworks. {3}
The Baumber kiln (TF195752) was built c.1870, possibly to replace an earlier kiln, and is situated at the extreme western edge of the parish on land formely owned by the Livesey family of Stourton Hall. It is constructed in local red brick with fire-brick only used to line the fire-holes. The kiln was operating until the mid 1890s. In 1986 and 1987 extensive restoration work created a new roof with an array of small vent chimneys, lean-to firing sheds and a pair of openings or wickets, one above the other, on the front (southwest) elevation. These changes were designed by the foremost authority on historic kiln features at the time, but it is not clear to what extent they are speculative. {4}{5}
