At Raithby are the remains of an eighteenth century textile mill complex. The first patent for a combing machine was taken out by Edmund Cartwright in 1789, with further patents in 1790 and 1792. Mr Chapman established one of Cartwright's steam-driven wool combing mill at Raithby at about this time. However, he 'lost a lot of money' and by 1797 nothing remained of it. {1}{2}
Earthwork remains of what may be a mill leat are visible on aerial photographs, although these have been interpreted as a medieval boundary. A further area of earthworks were noted during a site visit, which may be the remains of a mill wheel. The sale notice included two mill wheels. {2}{3}
Several buildings are marked on the 1906 County Series, but whether these are related to the mill industry is not clear. {4}
