Full Description

PRN 35346 The settlement of Rippingale is thought to date from roughly the seventh century. A twelfth century charter thought to be a copy of a seventh century charter refers to the Hrepingas family, from whom the place-name of Rippingale is thought to derive, and it is possible that this may indicate Saxon settlement in the area, although surrounding parishes seem to have Scandinavian place-name derivations.{1}{2} Six landholders were recorded by the Domesday Survey in the settlements of Rippingale and Ringstone (now a deserted settlement in Rippingale parish). {2}{4} The village itself has two foci, one along High Street towards the south of the village, and a second along Station Street to the north of the village, although the reasons for this secondary settlement are difficult to identify. {2} A walkover survey identified a possible holloway along the line of Station Street, although this hollow may be related to the stream which accompanies Station Street. A broad east/west ridge was observed crossing the site, coinciding with the projected line of the rear of old enclosures fronting Station Street.{2}{3} A large rim sherd was found during the making of a gravel path from the Rectory to the church c.1056. This path was cut into the turf of the present Park which probably lies over the area of the original medieval village. {4} During a watching brief at TF0994 2781 a foundation trench, likely to be of 12th-13th century date was recorded. A north-west south-east orientated boundary ditch. The boundary ditch has also been interpreted as showing a change of the layout of the existing village in the early medieval period. Thought to be of a similar date was also recorded. Large charcoal fragments, tiny fired clay fragments, 11th-13th century pottery, animal bone, burnt stone and fired clay were recovered from this trench and ditch. {5}{6} A large quantity of post-medieval features were recorded during a watching brief at TF0994 2781, consisting briefly of limestone wall foundations, floor surface, well and post holes. A limestone wall was recorded that is thought to be part of a multi-cell structure which was not fully exposed. The buildings floor had painted mortar and floor tiles, indicating that the building was probably domestic in nature. It is possible that industrial activity was also undertaken on this site. Defined by a trampled floor surface and layers of iron ore, powdered ore, burnt soil and charcoal. This may be indicative of iron ore roasting relating to iron smeltiing. Moulded medieval masonry was recovered, having been reused in foundations. {5}{6} Possible parchmarks or earthworks are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Station Street. {7}{8}
