Full Description

PRN 70217 During the excavation of trial pits, a quantity of Late 9th to 10th century pottery and some kiln furniture was recovered. It is possible that these may indicate the presence of a kiln on the site, as much of the pottery appeared to be kiln waste. This evidence is not conclusive, however; the deposits were limited in nature and extent, and may belong to part of a 'waster dump' associated with a nearby kiln site, possibly the Late Saxon kilns located at Sessions House, circa 160m to the south-south-west. {1}{2} During a watching brief at SK 9790 7160 further evidence of the possible late 9th to 10th century kiln site was recovered. One hundred and eighty four sherds were recorded which were mainly over fired vessels in a reduced quartz tempered fabric. Kiln furniture was also found, although the exact spot of production has not been found this is strong evidence of a local kiln in the vicinity. {3}{4}
