Full Description
A hoard of 30-40 Roman coins, dating from 69 - 168 AD (Hoard Index 4). It was found in 1946, during the excavation of an electricity cable-laying trench near the Avro works on Sleaford Road. Four coins were donated to the City and County Museum in 1946 by the Mid Lincolnshire Electricity Supply Company. They are issues of Domitian (RIC 238), Hadrian (RIC 69) and Marcus Aurelius (RIC 112 and 185). Two more coins were donated in 1954, which were issues of Vespasian (RIC 77) and Trajan (RIC 187). The remainder of the hoard was dispersed and the container, 'a small red pot' was destroyed. {1}{2}{3}{4}
'A silver denarius of Vespasian and Trajan were presented to the Lincoln Museum by two employees of the East Midlands Electricity Board. It appears that they were found in 1946 in laying a cable near the Avro Works, Bracebridge Heath (SK 98 67) and were to be connected with four denarii, one of Domitian, one of Hadrian, and two of Marcus Aurelius, presented to the Museum by the then Mid-Lincs Electricity Supply Co. This clearly suggested a hoard and conversation with the finders elicted the information that between 30 and 40 silver coins contained in 'a small red pot' had in fact been found in the trench. The pot was shattered by a pick and the coins dispersed among the workmen, and these six are all that are known at the present day. The latest coin is an issue of 168 AD which suggests a possible date for the concealment of the hoard towards the end of the second century.' {5}
