Full Description

During a watching brief, an east/west aligned robber trench was recorded, along with pottery thought to be production waste from the kilns at Silver Street, south of the site. Some of the pottery may derive from a kiln recorded at Sessions House, south-east of the site. {1}{2} Archaeological excavation was undertaken by Archaeological Project Services in 2003 on land between Flaxengate and Danesgate. Although one sherd of 5th to 9th century pottery was found, generally there was very little activity in this period on the site. However a large quantity of late 9th to 13th century evidence was revealed including pottery, a possible stone structure, pits, dumped deposits and floor levels, evidence of antler and small scale metal working areas, hearths, a mid 12th to 13th century structure and kiln waste. {3}{4}
