Full Description

During a watching brief, a stony layer and associated floor were recorded, along with a suspected robber trench. This evidence, alongside finds of Roman pottery, brick and tile, may indicate that a Roman structure of indeterminate form and function existed here. {1}{2} During trial trenching centred on NGR SK 97732 71558, a large quantity of residual Roman pottery and ceramic building material was recovered from Trench 1, at c.SK 97730 71542. Smaller amounts of Roman material were recovered from the other trenches. The assemblage included some imported wares and three stone tesserae, suggesting a high status site. {3}{4} Archaeological excavation was undertaken by Archaeological Project Services in 2003 on land between Flaxengate and Danesgate. Roman features and finds were recorded. Shallow linears, possibly timber structures, and a pit, all probably dating from the 1st century and a sherd of 1st century pottery was found. 2nd century evidence included pits, limestone slabs of a structure, two buildings and tesserae. 3rd to 4th century evidence includes pits and a townhouse which contained a 4th century mosaic floor, pottery, wall plaster and an oven. Late 4th to early 5th century evidence includes pottery but there is no evidence of structures indicating that the site had been levelled and the structures demolished by this date. {5}{6}
