Full Description

61517 There is an area of quarrying indicated on the County Series OS map of 1932. {1} There is place-name evidence for quarrying as early as 1675. {2} The Pits are in an area that that was open field up to enclosure in 1787. Any quarrying will date to after this. Before enclosure there were smaller pits in the south-east corner of the old enclosures mentioned in quite a few property deeds. {3}
