Full Description
A type 23, concrete anti-aircraft pillbox, to the south-east of North Sea Camp, Freiston. The standard design for this type of pillbox was modified to provide a machine gun embrasure and 3 rifle embrasures on two levels. {1}{2}
The pillbox was the subject of a programme of building recording, prior to being buried during reinforcement of the floodbank in 2001. A typical type 23 pillbox was rectangular, half-roofed and half-open, with a light anti-aircraft weapon in the open section. The existing floodbank had been constructed or raised after this pillbox was built, and a gun embrasure had been blocked to prevent soil entering. Graffiti was noted on the roof of the pillbox, appearing to date from its construction. {3}{4}
