Full Description

A type 23, three-bay concrete anti-aircraft pillbox, to the south-east of North Sea Camp, Freiston. {1}{2} The pillbox was the subject of a programme of building recording, prior to being buried during reinforcement of the floodbank in 2001. A typical type 23 pillbox was rectangular, half-roofed and half-open, with a light anti-aircraft weapon in the open section. The existing floodbank had been constructed or raised after this pillbox was built, and the gun embrasures had been blocked to prevent soil entering. The floor level was higher than outside the pillbox, suggesting the pillbox had been constructed on an previously existing floodbank or small mound. {3}{4}
