Full Description

61496 An eleventh century sword, 35 inches long, which may be Viking, was found on Canwick Common. It is now in the British Museum. It has a inscription in silver inlay, which is magical or nonsensical. It reads 'antananantananantananant'. {1}{2} Canwick Common became South Common and within the City boundary at the Canwick enclosure of 1787, although the use of the old name persisted into the middle of the nineteenth century. {3}
