Full Description
PRN 35334
The settlement of Cawthorpe is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Sokeland is recorded as beloning to Oger the Breton, and having a minimum population of approximately 19. The name means 'Kali's secondary settlement'. {1}{2}
Possible earthworks were noted in the field containing the dovecote at TF 0912 2204 during a site visit in 2003. {3}
Ridge and furrow has been recorded as surviving as earthworks to the north-east of the village at TF 0973 2155. {4}
The Diocesan Returns of 1563 recorded 22 households. {5}
There were around 23 families living in Cawthorpe in the early eighteenth century. {6}
During a watching brief, a post-medieval rubbish pit contaning 19th-early 20th century pottery and glass was recorded.{7}{8}
