Type and Period (1)
- MOOT (Early Medieval/Dark Age - 410 AD to 1065 AD)
Protected Status/Designation
- None recorded
Full Description
35332
The wapentake is referred to as 'Winegebrige' or 'Winebruge' in 1086. This name appears to be derived from an Old English personal name 'Winegar' and 'brycg'. The meeting place is identified by Anderson and Street before him as 'an insignificant bridge over the Mowbeck on the Harlaxton road called Winnibriggs'. This lies at the given grid reference and the fields close by are recorded as Winnibrigs Close in eighteenth century documents although the name also appears as William Briggs Close, perhaps raising doubts as to the ultimate source of the nineteenth century name. {1}
