  • (Early Medieval/Dark Age - 410 AD to 1065 AD)

Full Description

54539 The name 'spell bush' occurs in a terrier of 1625. Cameron derives it from the Old English 'spell' and 'busc' meaning 'bush', remarking that it was 'presumably the site of a local assembly'. There is no clue as to the location of the bush. Thoresway parish shares part of its western boundary with the parish of Walesby which, as mentioned above, may have been the central estate of the wapentake. This boundary is formed by the High Street. However, the terrier which records this name lists it as lying in the East Field which suggests a location on the opposite side of the parish. {1}
