Full Description

43918 The names 'Spelhou' and 'Spelhouwang' are recorded in a late twelfth century document. They appear to be derived from the Old English 'spel' and Old Norse 'haugr' or Old English 'hoh'. There is no indication of the site but since 'spelhou', 'spelhouwang' and 'spelhoufurlanges' are also recorded in the adjacent parish of Welton le Wold it seems possible that the site lay on or close to the parish boundary and both references are to the same place. There are several tumuli in the area which may have been the 'haugr' of the name. Alternatively the second element of the name may be the 'hoh' spur referring to the ridge along which the road runs. {1}
