43917 A late twelfth century document records the name 'Thingstede', within Authorpe parish in Louthesk wapentake. This appears to be derived from an Old English compound meaning 'assembly place' from the Old English/Old Norse 'thing' (meeting, court of justice) and the Old English 'stede' meaning 'place, site of a building'. The location of the site is unknown. {1}
