Full Description
61401
The field name 'Motehoudale' is recorded in this parish in the mid thirteenth century. It is explained by Cameron as deriving from the Old English (ge)mot, or possibly Old Norse 'mot' meaning assembly, Old Norse 'haugr', meaning mound and Old Norse 'deill' meaning 'a share/portion of land'. There is no evidence to indicate the location of the field. It may be worth noting that Canwick lies next to Lincoln on the very edge of the wapentake of Langoe, where it meets Graffoe and Lawress wapentakes. {1}
