Full Description
43916
The name Spetch Thorn occurs in the Edlington Tithe Award referring to a group of two fields at TF 214 707. It is possible that the name is derived from the Old English 'spec' meaning 'speech', but it may also mean 'small branch or twig'. The fields lie adjacent to a Roman road which crosses the High Street approx. 2.5-3km north-east. The road here is known as 'Mere Baulk' from the Old English '(ge)maere' meaning 'boundary' and forms the parish boundary between Edlington and Wispington. {1}
