Full Description

54537 Two placenames are recorded in Cabourne parish which suggest the presence of a wapentake (Haverstoe) assembly place. They are 'spelhau daile' and 'thingdaile'. The first appears to be derived from Old English 'spel' (speech/announcement) and Old Norse 'haugr' (hill/mound) and 'deill' meaning 'a share of land'. The second is from Old Norse 'thing' (meeting, court of justice) with 'deill'. There is no indication of the location of the sites but they may have been identical. Since a comparable name 'spelhou' appears in the adjacent parish of Nettleton it is tempting to suggest that the two names refer to the same site and that this was situated on the boundary. This is formed by Ermine Street and also forms the boundary between Haverstoe and Yarborough wapentakes. {1}
