Full Description
43910
There is documentary evidence from Great Steeping for the place name 'thinghou' which derives from Old Norse meaning 'assembly mound'. Since the second element of the name is identical with that of the wapentake name (Candleshoe) the lost 'thinghou' might be suggested as an alternative site for the wapentake meeting place. In this respect it may be worth noting that the north-eastern boundary of Great Steeping marches with candleby parish. On the other hand, its western boundary is that of Bolingbroke wapentake, so that a site in this area might represent a joint meeting place for these two wapentakes. {1}
