Type and Period (1)
- MOOT (Early Medieval/Dark Age - 410 AD to 1065 AD)
Protected Status/Designation
- None recorded
Full Description
43909
The name of the wapentake (Candleshoe) appears to be derived from an Old English personal name, possibly a Scandinavianised version of 'Ceolnop' and Old Norse 'haugr'. It is Calnodeshou at Domesday. The name does not survive but the same personal name does appear in the name of the village and parish of Candlesby. On this basis Anderson, following Canon Foster, suggests that the meeting place may have been Candlesby Hill, a substantial hill on the edge of Welton le Marsh parish overlooking Candlesby itself. There is no supporting evidence for this indentification, however. {1}
