The name 'spellehou' appears in a medieval document relating to Kirkstead Abbey. The name appears to derive from the Old English 'spell' and Old Norse 'haugr' meaning 'speech/announcement mound'. The site cannot be identified exactly. Ulceby lies at the very sout-western tip of Calcewath wapentake adjoining Hill and Candleshoe wapentakes. {1}
