Full Description

43906 'Spelowgate' has been noted in a terrier from East Keal, and appears to derive from the Old English for 'the road to a moot ridge'. This suggests either that there was a mound or spur which was used for the wapentake assemblies in East Keal, or that this was the route to a meeting place which was located elsewhere. There is a prominent spur of land which might well be described as a 'hoh' which means 'projecting ridge of land' at Hall Hill in West Keal (43573 - TF 357 639), which is the site of a substantial Anglo-Saxon cemetery. The site lies on and adjacent to the parish boundary with Bolingbroke looking immediately down over the town to the north-west and might be an appropriate site for the wapentake to meet. In the absence of more secure evidence for the location of the 'Spelowgate', however, this can remain nothing more than speculation. {1}
