Full Description
Earthworks of medieval ridge and furrow, to the west of Wragby were identified in the 1990s on older aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1}
Below ground remains of the medieval ridge and furrow were recorded in August 2000, during archaeological monitoring of the excavation of drainage trenches and primary roadways associated with the construction of Wragby Business Park. These remains comprised four parallel, east to west aligned, linear ditch-like features, recorded in the rough centre of the site. Contrary to the report's findings, later re-analysis of these features concluded that they were very likely to be the remains of medieval furrows, forming part of the previous agricultural use of this area. {2}{3}
Faint traces of ridge and furrow covering a larger area than that prevously noted by the NMP were noted in February 2007,during a site visit to assess land off Lincoln Road for industrial development. All of the remains were aligned on the same east to west axis previously identified, with very slight indications of an east to west aligned earthwork bank also being noted towards the southern end of the site. A single small and abraded sherd of medieval pottery was also noted on the site, though was not retained. {4}
A geophysical survey in 2023 found that while little remained above ground, there was partial survival of the ridge and furrow below ground. {5}{6}
Excavations also in 2023 confirmed the result of the geophysical survey. {7}{8}
