Full Description
Evaluation in 2000 found a large mound identified as a rifle range target used for training during the Crimean War. Surrounding this mound was a large scoop, which is likely to have been the origin of material for the mound. {1}{2}
The target is shown on the 1889 first edition Ordnance Survey map. It is part of a rifle range with firing points extending to the north east (towards Partney). {3}
The 1905 Ordnance Survey map shows a new rifle range to the west (PRN 48262) which appears to have replaced this one. {4}
This rifle range does not date from the Crimean War period (contra sources 1 and 2) but was opened in 1869. It is described as a 'new range' in the Stamford Mercury of 23 July 1869 and 22 October 1869 and replaced an even earlier Spilsby range, location not known, which opened in 1860. These ranges were used by the '7th Lincolnshire (Spilsby) Rifle Volunteer Corps'. {5}
