Full Description
Late 19th century school building. One and a half storey red brick building in English Bond, under a pitched gabled tile roof. Simple whitewashed bargeboards on the gable ends. The street-facing gable has one large rounded arch window, flanked by two narrower segmental arch windows. The building has since been expanded considerably. {1}
A Free School was built in Washingborough in 1728 pursuant to the will of Thomas Pyke, with property where, in 1856, there was a house and garden occupied by the schoolmaster. The school was rebuilt in 1850, and the dedication stone from the original school has been incorporated into the side wall of the school house. {2}{3}
The school building can be seen on the 1905 25 Inch Series OS map of Washingborough, but not on the 1886 Six Inch OS map, suggesting that it was built between these dates as a replacement for the 1850 building. {4}{5}
