Full Description

61319 The Methodist Church on Main Road in Washingborough was the 'United Methodist Church' in the early twentieth century. {1} A site visit was made in 2009. This chapel, built in 1882, superseded the attached chapel, built in 1857, which is now used as a church hall (PRN 65611). The chapel is built of red brick and has a gabled slate roof, with decorative ridge tiles, and ashlar dressings. The gabled front has three bays, separated by brick pilasters, and a central doorway with a narrow gable above with stone copings and kneelers. The door has a pointed arch with stone dressings and hoodmould and, in the apex above the door, an ashlar pediment inscribed 'Methodist Free Church 1882'. The front west gable has a vesica opening with quatrefoil plate tracery and the east gable a circular window with circular plate tracery. There is a broad ashlar string-course at the level of the window sills. The side elevation facing the road has four bays of pointed windows, which have red brick hoodmoulds which are extended to form a string-course, and are separated by stepped buttresses with stone cappings. The easternmost and westernmost windows are larger and the window frames have been replaced in plastic. The raised gables have stone copings and kneelers and the gable is embellished with dogtooth brickwork and a stylised foliage motif. Iron railings survive. Modern annexes have been added to the north.{2}
