Full Description

61240 Part of a medieval stone effigy was found in a delivery of stone rubble at the Old Bishop's Palace. It appears to have come either from Wellingore or Waddington, probably the former. The style of the armour was in use from about 1370 to about 1410, but fortunately the belts make a more precise dating possible. The narrow cross-belt does not seem to have come into use as a supplement to the hip-belt until c.1400, while the jupon with the scalloped lower edge shown on the fragment went out of use in the second decade of the fifteenth century. The effigy could be as late as c.1420, but it is more likely to date from c.1400-1410. {1}{2}{3}
