Full Description

Roman pottery and coins of Constantine I were taken from a quarry face in 1946 by Graham Webster. Further grey ware was found in 1956. {1}{2} Further pottery, mainly from the south east of the quarry was found in 1968. It includes grey ware, colour-coated ware, mortaria (Mediterranean), white slipware, dark gritted ware (Swanpool), rim of cream fabric (Hartshill-Mancetter potteries c.260-350). ID by K. Hartley. {3}{4} Also, at SK 975 648, Romano-British grey ware (3 wide mouth bowl rims), and rim and body sherds of straight sided flanged bowls of colour-coated ware were found in 1969. Shelly gritted ware in brown and dark grey, and brown ware with white slip on the exterior were also found. {5}{6}
