Full Description

PRN 35266 Millthorpe is not mentioned in the Domesday Survey of 1086 and may have been included in the entry for Pointon. The hamlet is first mentioned in the Assize Rolls of 1202, where it is referred to as Milnetorpe - meaning a secondary settlement with a mill. {1} Millthorpe is mentioned in Whites Directory as a small Hamlet with 64 souls and a few farmhouses. {2} An archaeological watching brief in September 1999 revealed two Medieval pits which appeared to pre-date this earliest reference to Millthorpe, indicating an earlier origin for the settlement. One of the pits was recut, and a single sherd of 11th to 14th century shelly ware pottery was recovered from the fill. Stamford ware and South Lincolnshire shelly ware of 11th to 12th century date was recovered from the fill of the other pit. It is considered possible that the pits are quarry or clay pits. A series of undated ditches may also be associated with the Medieval or post-Medieval settlement. A post-Medieval pond was also found. The watching brief also found scatters of Medieval and post-Medieval artefacts. {3}{4} A watching brief on 9 May 2000 to the east of the above project identified a linear ditch aligned east-west, visible for a length of 7.5m. Alongside this ditch was a probable pit, although there was no clear distinction between the two features. Quantities of 19th century pottery, glass, clay pipes and brick were retrieved from their common fill. The articulated remains of a cattle skeleton were close by the pit. {5}{6} During a watching brief at TF 1145 3090 a single sherd of abraded 13th-13th century Stamford ware. {7}{8}
