Full Description

Trial trenching uncovered several medieval features on this site. A near-vertical sided pit measured 0.66m wide by 0.42m deep. Two post-holes (one only probable) were also uncovered. Brick and tile evidence suggests that a possible building was in the vicinity during the 13th/14th centuries. Other finds, including slag, coal and charcoal, indicate that smithing was taking place in the area. The pottery finds indicate a wide trade network along the River Witham and overland at this time. Flood deposits indicate periodic flooding of the site, and the presence of a horse bone skate (unused) suggests that the Witham and local dykes and/or ditches froze over in the area at this time.{1}{2}
