Full Description

PRN 70207 During a watching brief and trial trenching of the area, in the northern part of the site, post-medieval features were found, including three wells and a level house platform. Well 1 was built of unbonded, flattish limestone fragments, had an internal diameter of c. 1m and was 700m deep (as recorded). Well 2 was brick-built (no measurements were provided for this feature). Well 3 was sub-circular in plan, measuring 0.95m south-east to north-west, and 0.85m south-west to north-east. Twelve courses of limestone were visible, each c. 50mm high. The house platform was apparently created prior to the construction of Victorian terraces on this site in the 18th/19th centuries, and unfortunately truncated all post-16th c. deposits in the area, apart from an area to the west and adjacent to Gibraltar Steps.{1}{2} In the southern part of the site (Stanthaket Court), further pits were recorded which were interpreted as being domestic rubbish pits. {3}{4} During a watching brief, mid-18th-19th century pottery was recovered.{5}{6}
