Full Description

PRN 70206 Occupation evidence during the Medieval period for this site was limited, due to the construction and subsequent demolition of Victorian terraces. Surviving evidence mainly related to the dumping of soil and the robbing of stone from Roman structures on the site. A succession of Medieval hillwash (here recorded as an artefact scatter) or 'dumped' material, possibly including rubble from a wall to the north, accumulated on the hillslope during the earlier part of the Medieval period. An east-west wall was revealed in the southern part of the site (Stanthaket Court), which may be a possible retaining wall for a terrace. Pits were also recorded.{1}{2}{3}{4} During a watching brief, three pits, two possible floors, a robber trench, medieval pottery, smithing slag and a possible medieval cased mirror were recorded. The slag, and some possible hammerscale may indicate metalworking in the vicinity.{5}{6}
