PRN 70205
A probable metalled surface most likely dating to the late Saxon or Saxo-Norman period and some domestic refuse pits were found during successive watching briefs and trial trenching. Some of these contained tenth-eleventh century pottery. Some of the other pits were largely undated, but were ascribed to the late Anglo-Saxon period due to their similarity to those which had been dated. The pits suggest the presence of dwellings in the area. No evidence for associated Anglo-Saxon structures has been found in the area, however, suggesting possible Anglo-Saxon reuse of Roman buildings in the area.
Extensive levelling was also recorded in the western part of the site, which may have formed the terraces later used during the medieval period. {1}{2}{3}{4}
During a watching brief, late Saxon pottery was recovered.{5}{6}
