Full Description

29 Steep hill is a fouteenth century timber framed building. It was remodelled in the seventeenth century, and altered and refronted in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. Restoration was carried out in the late twentieth century. 28, 29 and 30 are listed together. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} Geotechnical trial holes were excavated to the rear of 29 Steep Hill due to a proposed extension of the lower ground floor to the property. They revealed evidence for a cobbled path or yard to the rear of the medieval property. A period of post medieval land raising then appeared to have taken place and a further yard surface created. Further dumps of material overlay the yard and are suggested as being associated with the demolition of outbuildings known to lie to the rear of the property and demolished to make way for the realignment of Drury Lane in 1863. More recent deposits can be ascribed to the construction of the rear extension in the 1970s, when the property was turned into a public house. {2}{3} During a watching brief in May 2004 to January 2008, a north to south orientated stone foundation and associated flagstone floor was revealed which may be part of the orignal timber framed building that 29 Steep Hill forms part of. {4}{5}
