Full Description

A potato railway belonging to Nocton Estates is known to have existed along the route from Wasps Nest to Dunston Fen Lane, and then from there to the former Garden Farm. Its gauge was 1ft 11.5". Methods used to work the railway were horse, steam engine and diesel engine. {1}{2} Evidence for the railway was revealed during monitoring of water main replacement. In Trench A, a thin layer of pebbles was revealed which probably represents the remains of a surface connected with the railway. In trial pits 1-3, a topsoil horizon was observed which may represent the pre-Car Dyke ground surface covered with the upcast bank from the Car Dyke, or it could be an intermediate surface prior to make-up for the potato railway. {3}{4} The line formed part of the larger Nocton Estate Potato Railway, which served all of the estate farms in this area, running for 23 miles in total. {5}
