Full Description

During excavation in advance of quarrying at The Meadows, Baston Quarry (No 2) a Saxo-Norman and medieval enclosure system was identified, which had been established on land previously used for cultivation. The earliest phase is a rectilinear enclosure which continues outside the area of excavation. Inside the northern arm of the enclosure is a smaller enclosure. This smaller enclosure has a line of 11 posts running along the interior of the eastern side, which may have been to provide a fence screen or provide stability for the structure due to its proximity to the outer ditch. Within the enclosure were a number of pits, the two largest of which contained Stamford ware. Further pits and post holes were identified in the area of the enclosures. The smallest enclosure was recut at least once, and the larger enclosure was possibly enlarged. Further ditches and a gully which may represent beam slots were recorded associated with the larger enclosure. A sherd of twelfth century St Neots ware was recovered. A further structure to the west was also recorded which showed signs of burning. It is suggested that it may have been a hearth. It is L-shaped in plan, suggesting that it may have been open or constructed differently to the other structures. The enclosure system then appears to have been abandoned. One of the ditches seems to have continued in use as a field boundary when the land was subsequently used for ridge and furrow cultivation. This change is tentatively dated to the thirteenth century. {1}
