Full Description

Archaeological excavations at The Meadows in advance of quarrying suggest that once the Bronze Age settlement (see 35109) fell out of use, the land was not utilised at all during the Iron Age or early Roman period. A late Roman pottery scatter, dating from the third to fourth century was identified which is indicative of manuring scatters. The pottery types included colour-coated ware (including Nene Valley ware), shell-tempered ware, coarse ware and grey ware. Early Saxon pottery was also present showing continuous presence from the late Roman until the ninth century when the land use changed from agricultural (see 35243). {1}
