Full Description

A post mill with a roundhouse was located on Hykeham Moor. It was dated 1756 and ceased work in the Great War. It collapsed in the late 1930s and was cleared away. {1} It is suggested that the mill was in existence by 1737 from documentary evidence. It probably started with four canvas sails but, around 1803, two were replaced by shutter sails. The shutter sails were removed by 1907 and the mill gradually became dilapidated, its motion and works ending up in the Science Museum. The remaining two sails survived until demolition. {3} Hykeham Moor mill was built in 1753, but was derelict by 1923 and demolished by 1951. An inscription on the upright of the framing of the buck was 'TIMOTHY ASHFORD 1751'. {4}
