Full Description

Hykeham Mill is a tower mill which was built between 1824 and 1830 and worked until c.1925. It was dismantled almost immediately and was reduced to a two-storeyed stump. By 1977 this was just a derelict shell about 12 feet high. in the early 1980s it was converted into a summerhouse with a layer of mock stone cladding. {1}{2} It is suggested that the mill was built in c.1837-38. A 'fixed steam engine' is first mentioned in 1867. It was owned after 1881 by Richard Ladd, and consequently it was known as Ladd's Mill. The base was used during the Second World War as the local Home Guard headquarters. {3}
