Type and Period (1)

  • (Roman - 43 AD to 409 AD)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

A section across this road was recorded during a watching brief on a gas pipeline. The section was at the point where the straight stretch of road from Ulceby turns sharply south and the line of the Roman road follows a tarmaced farm track. There were two separate layers of crushed chalk below the modern tarmac surface. The second, or lower, layer of crushed chalk is possibly the remains of the Roman road. It is likely to be part of the original road surface but could be the severely eroded remains of the foundations. No roadside ditches were evident however the trench was very narrow and the trench had been disturbed to the south by constructions of a water pipeline. {1}{2}
