Full Description
A Wesleyan Methodist chapel is located in Skellingthorpe. {1}
The chapel was visited in 2009. The surviving chapel on the site was built in 1894 and is still in use as a chapel. There are documentary references to a Wesleyan Chapel built in Skellingthorpe in 1822 though it is unknown if this building was on the same site. The current chapel has a gabled roof and is constructed of red brick with yellow brick dressings. The front gable is raised with stone copings and kneelers. The front elevation has three bays with a projecting central bay and three stepped lancet windows with yellow brick arches and moulded stone hoodmoulds with foliage stops and leaded green/blue glass. A roundel in the gable has a yellow brick and stone border and the gable verge is ornamented with a stepped pattern in yellow brick. The three bays are divided by stepped, brick, angle buttresses with stone cappings. The side elevations have five bays of windows with pointed arches and plastic frames separated by buttresses. There are two string courses of yellow brick, the lower including a band of zig-zag in red brick. The attached school has similar decorative features. The slate roof has terracotta ridge tiles with a zig-zag profile and a metal and a terracotta finial. There are seven foundation stones. It is of similar design to the chapel at North Scarle (PRN 61060).{3}{4}
