Full Description
PRN 61119
A church at Ewerby is recorded in Domesday Book (24,38). {1}
The present church is mostly thirteenth or fourteenth century (probably 1325), although there is evidence for an earlier church in the Norman font base. It was restored in 1895. {2}{3}
On the floor of the north aisle is a pre-Norman gravestone and under the tower is the bowl of a Norman font, upturned and used as the base for the Decorated font, and the base of a former churchyard cross. In the floor of the church is a Saxon stone with a broad cross carved down the centre. {3}
The Saxon stone is discussed in more detail in the 'Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Stone Sculpture'. There is also a coped grave-cover with a 12th-13th century cross pattee design at the west end of the south aisle. {7}
A watching brief near the church revealed remains which may represent former churchyard boundaries (see 61120). {6}
The church is listed Grade I. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {4}
